The routines within our lives can lead us to feel that we are being exhausted, like a machine with an expended battery. This piece draws a connection between a lithium battery fire and the feeling of occupational burnout. I liked this connection because batteries consist of a series of chemical cells, while our brains are composed of a network of nerve and glial cells. These cells are damaged when they are overwhelmed in an electrical circuit or subjected to extreme stress, respectively. The feelings of exhaustion and emptiness can create a desire to escape from our routines. Butterflies are shown evacuating the fractured machine, representing the desire to flee from a burning mindscape and regain our vitality.
