When the doors zip to a relieving close,
I take rest on a sullen, graying seat
to gaze at musty bricks and sway with those
stops and goes of which this ride is replete.
The air down here brews in sheer loneliness,
untouched by soft elm trees or sunlight’s ray.
Her head on my shoulder does not suppress
the sinking thought that this will never stay.
There’s a restless vibrance in here. Dirty
corners and giggling teenagers will surge
in this groaning box. It takes a journey
in which my tear-brimmed eyes and smile merge.
This will never stay burning in my brain;
something that a metro cannot contain.
