Porcelain, resin, found objects, wood, 120 x 96 x 7 inches
By Vincent Frimpong
About Power Within, Frimpong wrote: “Power Within draws from personal memory and diasporic identity. The found objects recall the artist’s childhood—spaces filled with broken electronics, mechanical tools, and the tactile curiosity of taking things apart to understand how they worked. These materials become vessels of memory and cultural symbolism, bridging past and present, home and displacement. The use of discarded electronics speaks to the global circulation of technology and labor, while the ceramic fists—handmade, bodily, and grounded in craft—assert a human presence within that system. Together, they construct a dialogue between material and meaning, revealing how power, identity, and belonging are continuously reassembled from fragments of both memory and machine.
Viewers are invited to engage with Power Within both visually and conceptually—to look closely at the intricate layers of circuitry and recognize their own relationship to power, control, and connection. Standing before the work, one is meant to feel both the weight and the pulse of collective energy emerging from the center. The piece asks the audience to reflect on where power resides—in systems, in materials, or within themselves—and how memory, technology, and identity converge in shaping that understanding.”
