Editor-in-Chief

Mikayla Johnson formally studies creative writing as a graduate student at Brigham Young University, and informally studies sourdough bread baking, patchwork quilting, and Aqua Zumba from anyone gracious enough to teach her. Mikayla writes young adult and middle grade fiction, picture books, and creative nonfiction essays; her work has been published or is forthcoming in The Evermore Review and AWE: A Woman’s Experience. Along with her husband and two young sons, Mikayla makes her home in Springville, UT.

Assistant Editor-in-Chief

Tricia Cope is a first-year graduate student at Brigham Young University studying British literature. Her research interests include spirituality and virtue ethics studies. She currently works on campus as a graduate teaching assistant and enjoys rubbing shoulders with any professor or student who will talk with her about literature. When not reading or writing (or talking about reading and writing), Tricia spends time with her husband, Brandon, and their seven children, who love to travel to new places and eat good food together. Tricia also dabbles in photography and design, and is obsessed with good art, European architecture, period dramas, her wood stove, and warm beverages.

Creative Nonfiction Editor

Ariel Hemloch (she/her) is a graduate student studying Creative Writing at Brigham Young University. Her writing delves into nostalgia, proselytes environmentalism, and smooches brooding vampires (among other things). She’s currently the Creative Nonfiction editor at Inscape Journal and believes literature thrives when rooted in humanity and/or nature. She spends half the year living on her family’s farm in Southwestern Idaho – hunting cryptids with her seven cats – and the other half in Provo, Utah. Fiction Editor

Tanner Millett is a life-long fiction writer, a recent dabbler in poetry, and a current graduate student studying creative writing at Brigham Young University. Now in his third year on the Inscape staff, he still enjoys reading through the slushpile and finding gems that make him smile and see life a little differently. He believes in literature that is approachable yet meaningful, with realistic characters that you can understand even when you can’t relate to them. Outside of the journal, Tanner enjoys teaching creative writing classes, writing overly-long novels, going on meandering walks, and listening to Jim Croce. Born and raised in Austin, he now resides in Provo, Utah.

Assistant Fiction Editor

Janaya Tanner was born and raised in Provo, Utah and frequently takes inspiration from the beautiful and diverse landscape in her writing. Her other main source of ideas, inspiration, and motivation is her husband and her adorable daughter. She is currently working on her MFA in fiction and while she enjoys writing in nearly any genre, science fiction is where she thrives.

Poetry Editor

Ruth Arce is a Latinx poet and editor. She is an MFA graduate student at Brigham Young University. In addition to Inscape, she is the poetry editor for Soft UnionShe believes in the functional approach to the visual elements of the printed poem, in which lineation can be used as an aesthetic element that is proactive with the other communicative elements of the poem to heighten and expose another dimension of the content. Her works explore themes such as time, the absurd, surrealism, human anatomy, memory, and experimental forms of verse and flash fiction. She lives in Provo, Utah.

Visual Art Editor

Amber Wilkin was born in 1998 in Toledo, Ohio. She will receive her BFA in Art at Brigham Young University in April of 2024. This past spring, Wilkin participated in the program’s study abroad in Spain where she created her “Ownership” series. Wilkin currently lives and works in Provo, UT.

Abby Stirland is, at her heart, a storyteller. As an undergraduate at BYU, majoring in English, she has reveled in the literature that edifies the human experience. She has also strived to create her own— including poetry, personal essays, short stories, and novels—desiring to impact others with the written word. When she’s not working on the journal, she studies film, plays soccer, and treasures her family and friends. She is a slam poet, a Gryffindor, and a Tangled lover. Her aspirations also consist of attending law school and becoming a mother. She is from Utah, where she plans to remain; its mountains are her home.

Grace Hyatt is an English major at Brigham Young University with a emphasis on Creative Writing. Her focus is YA fiction with a special interest in folktales and myths while also exploring the contemporary genre. Grace has loved reading and writing since she was a child and firmly believes that stories are at the center of every human being. While she finishes up her bachelor’s degree, she resides in Provo Utah with her husband and graduates in April of 2023

Faculty Advisor

Cheri Pray Earl graduated with her master’s degree in creative writing from Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1995 and has taught creative writing and literature courses for the BYU Honors Program and the English Department for more than 28 years. She was awarded BYU Honors Professor of the Year in 2005, which she brags about every chance she gets. Cheri has also worked as the faculty adviser and managing editor of Insight, the BYU Honors Magazine, as a writing coach for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Saints history project, and as a writer for the Church of Jesus Christ Saints history project. She’s written freelance articles and essays for the Marriott Alumni Magazine, BYU Honors Writer’s Handbook, and Segullah among others, and is currently the faculty advisor for Inscape.
