Driving through Montana

Claire Åkebrand

The night sky is
a ghost town.

Stars—
bullets half buried
in the dirt.

My love, after turning off the radio, I thought I heard
the wind blow through the gates of some saloon.
Please wake and watch with me while clouds like smoke swell
from that dark corner above.

The moon—
that slow pulse of cigar.
