First Night Home

by Barry McKendry

With little Nathan at her breast, my wife
she rocks a lullaby
of maidens fair and unicorns
that fly in starlit night-time.

I cat-walk to their side
and softly lift my hand to feel
the shudder of her ember flesh
and gasp
at his tiny snowflake hands.
